Job Opportunity: Executive Director
Term: Full-time, permanent. Workdays are Tuesdays-Saturdays; evening and weekend work is required for committee meetings and events.
Compensation: $25.50/hour at 35 hours/week, two weeks of paid vacation per year.

As an artist-run centre, Hamilton Artists Inc. (the Inc.) empowers artists of all career levels to take risks with their contemporary visual arts practices and present their work in a critical context. Our exhibitions, publications, and special projects offer education and mentorship, facilitate regional and national dialogue, and encourage collaboration, conversation, and critical inquiry. The Inc. aspires to connect with our changing communities by taking an intersectional approach, identifying and removing systemic barriers, and supporting artists and art practices that reflect the people of our region.
As Executive Director for Hamilton Artists Inc., the successful candidate will conduct the operational, developmental, and financial management of the organization, in accordance with its strategic and operational plan. The Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Programming Director in non-hierarchical roles to oversee the staff and operations of the organization and will report to the Board of Directors. The successful candidate will receive training and professional development opportunities.

The successful candidate will possess:
Minimum of 3 years of experience in a not-for-profit art gallery or equivalent administrative experience.
A diploma, degree or relevant experience in arts administration, not-for-profit management, business administration, or fundraising and development preferably within the arts and cultural sector.
Ability to create and manage budgets, audits, and payroll; bookkeeping experience considered an asset.
Demonstrated commitment to centering anti-oppression and anti-racism in all aspects of their work, guided by frameworks of equity and intersectionality.
Experience with grant writing for arts councils and foundations; familiarity with CADAC considered an asset.
Experience cultivating strategic sponsorships, partnerships, and fundraising opportunities.
Ability to work collaboratively with the Programming Director and Board of Directors.
Supervisory experience working with staff, interns, and volunteers.
Experience with membership management and recruitment.
Strong verbal and written communications skills.
Excellent interpersonal, attention to detail, problem solving, and organizational skills.
Computer skills (PC), Quickbooks, Microsoft Office, GSuite, Social Media. Experience with Hootsuite, WordPress, Adobe Creative Suite, and MailChimp considered an asset.
Solid knowledge of Canadian contemporary art, as well as an understanding of the Hamilton and regional arts community.
Knowledge of a second language, including ASL, an asset
Primary responsibilities include:
Administration and Operations
Writing grants and reports, and regularly pursuing other funding opportunities.
Supporting human resources, including overseeing volunteers, interns, and staff.
Managing the maintenance, security, and upkeep of the facility.
Establishing metrics and reporting on statistics that evaluate operational impact.
Working with the Board of Directors and Programming Director on strategic and operational planning.
Timely and accurately reporting to the Board of Directors.
Overseeing and contributing to the activities of the Finance, Facilities, Development, and Special Events & Fundraising committees.
Administering the funds of the organization.
Managing payroll and employee benefits, preparing materials for the annual audit, tracking cash flow, overseeing bookkeeping, forecasting and creating monthly financial reports.
Working with the Board Treasurer to oversee budgets and financial resources.
Fundraising and Sponsorship
Cultivating and maintaining relationships with community groups, institutions, donors, and sponsors.
Managing fundraising initiatives, sponsorships, revenue development and diversification.
Conducting the facility rental program.
Advocacy and Community Outreach
Advocating for the rights of artists, artist-run culture and developing critical models of arts engagement on a regional and national level.
Helping out with day-to-day needs of the gallery, including support as needed for installations, exhibitions, and special events.
In addition to the Co-Chairs of the Board and the Programming Director, the Executive Director is a public representative of the organization, and as such, attends community events on behalf of the organization.
